Chris Byler and his wife Patty are no strangers to small business ventures. The Byler’s were both raised in entrepreneurial families and always dreamed of once owning their own small business. So when Children’s Orchard, the upscale-resale shop in Blue Springs, MO, went up for sale in their own back yard, the Byler’s jumped at the business opportunity.
Chris has worked for a telecommunications company for 21 years, while Patty previously worked for Children’s Orchard. Patty’s past experience with Children’s Orchard was a very enjoyable one, and the fact that Patty understood the day-to-day operations of the store made Children’s Orchard a no-brainer for the Byler’s.
The Byler’s chose Children’s Orchard because they knew it would withstand the ups and downs of the economy. “Children’s Orchard was an excellent business choice because we can really help families in the area, especially in a down economy,” said Chris. “And the store is small enough that he can give each customer personal attention.”
Since taking over the Children’s Orchard in Blue Springs, the Byler’s have received excellent feedback from the community. For the Byler’s, it’s a win-win. They are able to provide families with brand name clothing and products at 40-80 % less than the original retail prices and fulfill a lifelong dream of owning a business. The Byler’s experience with Children’s Orchard has been so positive, in fact, that they purchased a second store located in Kansas City in January, 2007.
“Operating our Children’s Orchard franchise helps us to give back to the local community but also gives us the flexibility to spend more time with our family,” said Chris. The store is located less than five miles from their home, making it easy for Chris and Patty to get home or to the store in the case of an emergency or to attend children’s activities. The Byler’s have also included their children in the day-to-day operations, including their three daughters, ages 11, 13 and 17. Their oldest daughter, Amanda, works part time at the store, while the younger daughters help fold clothes and organize toys on the shelves.
Founded in 1980, Children’s Orchard is the nation’s first franchise of gently used and new name-brand children’s items. With more than 60 franchise locations, each Children’s Orchard location buys and sells quality used and new children’s brand name clothing, toys and accessories in an upscale retail environment. Children’s Orchard stores are designed to emphasize quality, value, comfort and commitment to the local community.
